Located in the scenic Karatina region of Nyeri County, Kenya, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range, the Karagoto Factory is supported by over 1,700 smallholder members, each managing farms averaging half a hectare. The factory focuses on high-quality coffee varieties, mainly 95% SL 28 and SL 34, with small amounts of Ruiru and Batian. Coffee production is divided into two seasons: the late crop from late September to mid-January, which makes up about 70% of production, and the early crop from April to July, accounting for the remaining 30%.

Coffee cherries are handpicked at peak ripeness and processed the same day at Karagoto's wet mill. The cherries undergo overnight fermentation to break down sugars, followed by thorough cleaning and soaking before being spread on raised drying tables for 13 to 14 days, depending on the climate. The meticulous drying process includes continuous sorting and hand-turning of the parchment to ensure quality.

Access to the factory involves a 3.5-hour drive from Nairobi, with farms located close to the washing station, typically a short motorbike ride or a 20-minute trail walk away. The community, predominantly Kikuyu, adheres to strict environmental regulations prohibiting logging and hunting, and while educational opportunities are limited, leading to urban migration, coffee remains a hopeful business for many families.
